Ways to Volunteer
Building Peaceful Bridges (BPB) has many volunteer opportunities in various roles. Volunteering for BPB allows you to support our mission and helps you develop, enhance, or maintain your business skill set.
We aim to provide our volunteers with ways to connect with one another building community, to provide networking opportunities, and to see the collective impact of the BPB volunteer team working together to make our country a more welcoming place for refugees. Treasurer
We are a young 501(c)(3) charity in our sixth year with a big vision. The Treasurer will manage all monies coming in and going out of the organization. This will include working with our bank, our accountant/bookkeeper, annual and monthly budgeting, generating financial reports, paying expenses, managing incoming funds and working with the President of the Board and Chief Operating Officer (CEO), once hired, to set salaries for staff, independent contractors and interns. Reporting to the Board President and CEO (once hired), this position is critical to the growth and expansion of Building Peaceful Bridges and our impactful programs. Through these programs, we assist in family resettlement by establishing a community safety net, assisting in the citizenship process, and building trust, hope, resilience, and empowerment. Ultimately, refugees give back to their community and make the country
stronger.
Responsibilities and duties
The Treasurer will:
- Commit to the mission, goals and policies of BPB.
- Establish and maintain relationships with our accountant and/or bookkeeper.
- Generate annual and monthly budget with the President
- Manage our bank account and PayPal account
- Manage our fiscal agency accounts
- Make payments to our staff and refugee family’s expenses (rent) as needed
- Reimburse staff and volunteers for expenses
- Pay annual fees and renew subscriptions for BPB
- Manage all monies for fundraisers and educational programs
Skills and qualifications
The Treasurer needs to have:
- A background in business, bookkeeping or accounting
- Strong verbal and written communications skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Must be flexible, adaptable, and possess time-management skills
- Must have multitasking and analytical skills
Education and experience
- College education
- Past experience working with a non-profit
Volunteer hours and benefits
This is a volunteer position. The Treasurer is also on the Board of Directors, which would require additional responsibilities, such as attending quarterly meetings and affirming no conflicts of interest. BPB volunteers are likely to:
- Embrace and grow their passion for purpose, peace, and inclusion.
- Give between 15-20 hours a month (or more if interested) and commit to 12+ months.
Grants Researcher
Building Peaceful Bridges is seeking volunteers to support Grant Research and writing! This virtual role is perfect for students, retirees, or anyone with an interest in grant research and grant writing. The Volunteer Grant Researcher would fulfill an important role as Building Peaceful Bridges pursues grant funding for our organization. The individual will provide essential research to aid in the achievement of our grant-funding goal. The volunteer will interact with the Grants Team Leader and President.
Knowledge, skills and experience
- No experience needed, just the willingness to learn. All that’s required from you is your time and effort.
- Grant applications are open for a specified timeframe so a commitment to complete the research by a mutually agreed upon deadline is critical. There will not be last minute requests.
- Familiarity with Grant Station a plus, but not needed.
- Access to a computer is required.
- Goal driven, ability to self-motivate, stay on task and work independently.
- Strong time-management, organizational and internet research skills a must.

Where/When
This opportunity is remote (meaning you can work from wherever) and you can lend your support however it works for your schedule, depending on your interests and time commitment.
Time Commitment: Flexible, 4 – 8 hours per month. Complete grants research when you want. Grants team Zoom meeting 1 hour per month, date and time TBD.
Role responsibilities
- Research and identify available and applicable grants.
- Research, retrieval and assembly of background materials for grant proposals.
Support
Training and resources will be provided.
The Rosemary Gabriel Shop Manager
The Rosemary Gabriel Shop Manager volunteer position falls under BPB’s program Bridge to Belongings and is responsible for managing day to day operations, inventory and customers and the In-Kind donations to BPB.
Reporting into the Coordinator of Bridge to Belongings, this position is critical to the growth and expansion of Building Peaceful Bridges and our impactful programs. Through these programs, we assist in family resettlement by establishing a community safety net, assisting in the citizenship process, and building trust, hope, resilience, and empowerment. Ultimately, refugees give back to their community and make the country stronger. We have impacted 200+ families and we hope to double our support this year.
Responsibilities and duties
The Manager will:
- Manage day to day operations and coordinate donations and drop offs
- Manage volunteer participation and shifts
- Provide on the job training of volunteers
- Coordinate with BPB Volunteer Coordinator and Family Support Manager
- Provide customer service to family shoppers
- Managing inventory of The Shop
- Organize sorting and distribution of donations
- Maintaining a clean and welcoming Shop environment
- Financial reporting (spreadsheet) of donations and the value of the items
Skills and qualifications
The Manager needs to have:
- Strong communication, motivational and organizational skills
- Ability to coordinate and manage volunteers; requires strong time management skills
- Sensitivity to and respect of cultural differences
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
Hours
This is a volunteer position.
● Give between 6-8 hours per month (or more if interested) and commit to 6+ months.

Gather for monthly luncheons. Meet neighbors and refugees from around the world. Hear speakers address issues relevant to today's refugees.
